In more cases than not, a root canal is your last option to preserve a tooth that has been affected by severe:

Rather than pull the tooth, we simply remove the diseased nerve inside of it and seal the chamber off. This allows your tooth to continue functioning, without the risk of a bacterial infection spreading to other teeth.
